... a whole web site about enshittification, the phenomenon of companies offering an initially good product for an initially good price, and then once they dominate the market, gradually degrading the quality, raising the prices, and buying all their competitors to protect their vertical and horizontal monopolies.

Recent stories: mattresses,
restaurant supplies (and therefore restaurants),
clothing,
eyeglasses,
power tools,
backpacks.
(The web site helpfully lists, in each area, a few companies that are not owned by the monopoly, in case you want to steer your purchasing there. I hope, but don't know for certain, that those companies haven't paid for placement.)

Thanks to JVL at the Bulwark for the link. (He also points to a USA Today story about the enshittification of youth hockey.)

As JVL points out, capitalism does some things extremely well, but it tends towards monopoly the way physical systems tend towards entropy. If there isn't some counteracting force, like government anti-trust regulation, capitalism inevitably leads eventually to low-quality products at high prices because there's only one significant producer. Competitors can't break into the market because the monopolist controls the distribution channels and/or the input materials.

Of course, as we've seen in the past 15 months, government regulation can itself be deeply corrupt, actively helping companies that pay suitable bribes to the President while trying to shut down those that don't.
