We got to bed late because I was installing a new dining room chandelier. The old one was down to three (of eight) functioning sockets, and the room was getting pretty dim. The new one is a bit smaller (six sockets), so I may be less likely to bump my head on it, and all six sockets work, and I put in "100 W equivalent" LED bulbs producing 1100 lumens each, so the dining room is now much brighter.

Installing this sort of thing would be easier if what's behind the ceiling matched what the directions assume is behind the ceiling. The directions say "screw these two screws into the junction box," and "attach this wire to the black wire from the power supply," and "attach that wire to the white wire from the power supply," and "attach this other wire to the grounding screw." Unfortunately, there is no junction box, only a wooden stud, and "these two screws" weren't wood screws, so I used a couple of wood screws I already had to attach to the stud. And there wasn't a black wire and a white wire; there were three fat black wires, two fat white wires, and a less-fat cream-colored wire. I tried attaching this wire to the black wires, that wire to the white wires, and the grounding wire to the cream-colored wire, and the light came on successfully but the wall switch didn't work -- it was "always on". So I went back to the wiring scheme that I had used successfully for the previous chandelier: this wire to the white wires, that wire to the cream-colored wire, and completely ignore the black wires. The grounding screw on the mounting strap doesn't really count as "ground" any more, since it's attached only to a wooden stud, so I wrapped the grounding wire around the metal screw-mount that peeped out from behind the stud, and wrapped electrician's tape around them both in hope that it would stay on. Anyway, it seems to work.
