I was walking the dogs yesterday morning and a garbage truck pulled up beside us. "Odd," I thought, "this isn't trash day." But it was the day before Pesach, and all the orthodox-Jewish houses in the neighborhood had a lot of stuff to get rid of before Saturday night. Perhaps to the relevant rabbinic authorities "in a trash barrel outdoors" doesn't count as "out of the house". Anyway, apparently the NYC Department of Sanitation is willing to do some extra pickups for this purpose.

Trigger warning: holocaust

I and a few other prisoners were on a work crew dealing with the bodies of other prisoners not so fortunate as to be on a work crew. We were in the back room of a former shop, and every minute or two a body would be pushed in from the front room; our job was to remove anything obviously valuable (there was a row of cardboard boxes for different categories of valuables), put the body into an oven drawer, and push it into the oven. There was no screaming or crying, just a lot of ashes. At one point I stopped and raised my hands in silent anguish over the work we were expected to do, but only for a moment because I didn't want to be seen as not getting it done. Better to be pushing the oven drawer than in it.

No idea why I would be having a Holocaust dream.
