Nature red in tooth and claw

As I was walking to the train station this morning, something hit the side of my head, fairly hard. (No blood -- my parka hood took a good deal of the impact.) At first I thought somebody had thrown a ball at me, but after a fraction of a second I realized it was a sparrow, which had recovered from the impact sufficiently to get across the street and disappear into a bush.
