busy weekend
Mar. 26th, 2017 07:01 amYesterday morning,
shalmestere went into Manhattan for vielle and viol lessons, while I waited at home for a delivery from Lowe's. There are now 600 pounds of bamboo flooring in the living room (it's supposed to be at room temperature for a week before installation, to minimize subsequent swelling and shrinking), and somewhat more paint, lumber, and doors in the garage than were there before. Oven/range hasn't been delivered yet (not that I'd know where to put it), and we haven't actually picked out a final paint color (the paint in the garage is mostly primer or trim paint).
Today, the main job is to move EVERYTHING out of the kitchen and the adjacent coat-cum-instrument closet. To this end, I went to Staples yesterday and picked up another ten copier-paper boxes, boxed up most of the Oddly Shaped Kitchen Implements, moved the majority of the pots and pans to the basement, set up a coat rack in the basement to which coats can move from the closet, and cleared a space in the living room for the current microwave to live until it's replaced in two weeks. The cookbooks were boxed up three weeks ago, and most of the jars, bottles, and non-perishable ingredients were boxed up two weeks ago. Still need to put away a bunch more utensils, triage the chocolate, find temporary homes for the blender and other things we can reasonably use in the Kitchen In Exile, take four spice racks off the wall, and take down various other racks from which pots, pans, and long utensils have been hanging.
A related job is to pre-cook a bunch of easily-microwaveable things. Last week we braised a rabbit that had been in the back of the freezer for years. It was nummy, albeit somewhat tricky to cut up, and we then threw the carcass and scraps into a pot of water to make stock. So now we have half a gallon of bunny broth to turn into soup before it spoils or we lose the stove. A batch of pancakes are planned for this morning, producing leftovers that will be
shalmestere's breakfast for the week. Maybe a batch of sausage-quiche tartlets, ditto.
And we have concert tickets in Manhattan this afternoon, right in the middle of all this. It'll be a long day.
I plan to work from home, on my laptop, for much or all of the next two weeks while the workers are demolishing and rebuilding the kitchen. I'm not sure yet what time they'll show up on Monday.
