There was a news report on an interesting discovery at one of the deepest ocean trenches, but only a few hours later there were indications that part of that trench was actually 3000 meters deeper than the original report had said. This created an enormous "fake news" scandal, and a series of breathless opinion pieces (with far more play than the original story) that boiled down to "you can't believe anything you hear from scientists".
