So I did a thing...

Roughly the same Thing as in this post: a 5km run/walk along the banks of the Hudson River, sponsored by My Benevolent Employer. I apparently finished in 31:58 minutes, one second faster than last year, or 10:17 minutes per mile, 73rd percentile for time among all the runners (which isn't bad, since I was probably 95th percentile by age). I was drenched in sweat, and fairly wiped out physically for a couple of hours thereafter.

Returned to the office, changed my shirt, and had some grapes (carbs AND water! Two great tastes that taste great together!), sat in air conditioning for a while, then went home, took a shower, and changed everything else. Feeling better now.

exercise and aging

I took an hour out of my work day to go to the swimming pool. Left the house a bit before 4:00 (wanted to leave earlier, but it took me a while to find my gym-bag). Got there around 4:15, stood in a line it turned out I didn't need to stand in, then went upstairs and checked in with my membership card and combination lock, no line. There were lots of lap-swim lanes, but more than half of them were closed for no obvious reason. Anyway, I swam nine laps before the lifeguards ordered everybody out of the pool at 5:00. They would reopen at 5:30, but only the "open swim" area, not the lap-swim lanes. Drove home in bad rush-hour traffic and did some more $EMPLOYER work. I think I hadn't swum laps in a regulation-sized pool since 2019.

One of the other guys in my lane commented "You swim really well for your age." I didn't ask him what he thought "my age" was -- I assume he based his estimate on the white hair in my eyebrows and five-o-clock shadow -- but I guess I can check off that Bingo square now.

So I did a thing...

My Beloved Employer held a 5K run, on the same day at all its offices worldwide. I signed up, along with most of my work team, and started training: whenever I didn't need to catch an early train to go to the office, I would run/walk around a 2-3-mile circuit on a horse-trail in the park near my house, then come home, walk the dogs, shower, and eat breakfast. I'm not up to jogging the whole 2-3 miles, so I would alternate 75 paces jogging with 75 paces walking. Then, after a few sessions when I thought I could go faster, I changed to alternate 90 paces jogging with 60 paces walking. Which is what I did at the race yesterday: 90 paces jogging, 60 paces walking, repeat as necessary.

It went pretty well. There were 839 racers at my site in Manhattan (on the walkway along the bank of the Hudson), and I came in 615th, about 75th percentile for time -- which is not bad, considering I was probably 95th percentile for age. Finished the 5K in 31 minutes, 59 seconds, and did not have a heart attack, nor drop from heat exhaustion. My joints are a little sore: the walkway is mostly stone or brick, while the horse-trail in the park is mostly dirt.

Not sure whether I want to continue jogging in the park: other forms of aerobic exercise, such as swimming, are easier on the joints. On the other hand, swimming has more overhead costs, including driving to the swimming pool and paying for pool membership.
