kitchen renovation
Signed a contract last night for the kitchen renovation. I was planning to meet
shalmestere at the Lowe's in Brooklyn so we could both go over things and both sign paperwork, but she had a particularly rough day (a medical exam involving needles, IV drips, and large, noisy, claustrophobic machines) and didn't want to deal with driving to Brooklyn at rush hour. So I did the visit and paperwork by myself. (We'd already agreed on most of the appliances and finishes in previous visits.)
It involved promising to pay five digits' worth of money. The only more-expensive thing I've ever promised to pay for was a house (six digits). It'll seriously disrupt our day-to-day lives for a few weeks in March.
But I think it'll be a big improvement. The kitchen was last "done" about 1980, with the appliances, wallpaper, vinyl flooring, and faux wood-grain formica cabinets that implies.

Education? Or did you have enough scholarship money or parental benevolence there?

I think the Month of Great Disruption will be March. Will need to get rid of a bunch of stuff currently occupying space in the basement and garage, some time in the next month. Made a start yesterday by throwing out some expired canned goods and fixing a chair so it could move from the repair shop in the basement to active duty in the dining room.
