a new musical opportunity
Went to Fordham Collegium Musicum last night, directed by Tracy Cowart of Alkemie. Mostly Fordham undergrads, but open to "the community": there was one grad student from Juilliard and me. They're doing parts of Roman de Fauvel, which
shalmestere did at Amherst last year but I haven't done, so that'll be new repertoire for me. They're doing a concert Dec. 6, which (as one of the students pointed out and the director hadn't realized) is the date that the manuscript was finished in 1417. Unless you believe the scholar's theory that it was backdated; apparently Marigny, the courtier on whom Fauvel may be modeled, was arrested the next day and subsequently hanged. We didn't actually do much music last night: most of the class period was given over to guest lecturer Christopher Preston Thompson talking about the manuscript and its historical context.
