Medieval tent stuff

Just wanted to let people know about several recent posts by Will McLean:

  • quotations from an account book of King Rene d'Anjou, 1453, discussing his pavilion, ropes, pulleys (!), rings for the pulleys, rods (presumably stiffening battens) for the walls, etc.

  • a lovely tent picture from a ms. of Lancelot du Lac et la quete du Graal at the BNF

  • some discussion of the umbraculum (Lat.) or ombrellino (Ital.), a sort of parasol that shows the availability of certain construction techniques that might have been used by medieval tentmakers
