windows
Our hundred-year-old house still has, apparently, the original windows on the ground floor, but the second-floor windows were all replaced in the 1970's or 1980's with cheap-looking vinyl windows. The plastic handles have photodegraded and now crumble in the hand. And a few years ago something hit one of the panes and broke it (fortunately only the outer pane, so we haven't had snow and rain coming into the house).
We had a visit a few years ago from an Anderson salesman. We didn't like his slick, high-pressure sales pitch, and the samples he showed us looked and felt only slightly less plasticky than what we've got, so we postponed the project. Yesterday afternoon we had a visit from a Pella salesman, who was much more low-key and was selling nicer-looking, real-wood windows, so he walked away with a signed contract for $$$$$. I think we should be able to get at least 20% of the cost back next April through Historic District tax credits.
