kitchen renovation

After two weeks...

The ceiling is drywalled. The walls and ceiling are painted. The floor is bamboo (over various layers of vinyl and linoleum). The cabinets are installed, except for handles. Two window frames are replaced. The door to the basement, and its frame, are replaced. Two overhead light fixtures are replaced. The new refrigerator is in the niche where cupboards and microwave used to be. The new microwave and range are installed and plugged in. We inaugurated the stove last night by making hot chocolate.

Some Time Real Soon Now (tm), somebody will come to take measurements for the countertops. Then we hurry up and wait for two weeks while they manufacture "quartz" countertops to order. Then the work crews come back, install the countertops, install the sink and dishwasher, put a knob and latch into the door, and paint the trim (moldings, window and door frames, door). And (I hope) haul away the trash and recyclables they've generated.

The new floor looks nice, although it's covered with cardboard at the moment to prevent scratches and paint drips from the remaining work. The new wall paint looks nice. The new cabinets look a little shinier and blonder than they did in the store; we're discussing ways to improve the finish. (At least they're basically wood, rather than blatantly-faux plastic wood-grain as before.) The new refrigerator has the same footprint as the old one, and is about six inches taller, but mysteriously seems to have less capacity: we're considering putting a small trunk freezer in the basement.

Everything in the living room and dining room is covered with a fine layer of dust, and I think we can now start cleaning it up. This may provide an impetus to get rid of some stuff -- dishes we haven't used in twenty years, books we'll never read, etc.
