Whatever one may say about royalty and the Church in the Middle Ages, they both sponsored a lot of beautiful art that wouldn't have been made, and a lot of artists who wouldn't have been employed, otherwise.

Sometimes it's necessary to build something utterly useless, just because it's beautiful.
