A weird weekend
We were planning to go to a concert in Manhattan Sunday afternoon, but the relevant subway line is closed for repair today, and we weren't terribly enthusiastic about the concert, so we stayed home and did house stuff instead.
In particular, we have a kitchen renovation happening in two weeks, and the awful truth had just sunk in that we need to Remove All the Things from the kitchen by then. The refrigerator isn't technically in the kitchen, but it's in an adjacent space which is having its floor replaced as part of the renovation, so I guess we need to Remove All the Things from the refrigerator too... and either move the refrigerator or get rid of it and rent a small dorm fridge for the duration. Come to think of it, the coat/instrument closet is also having its floor replaced, so we probably need to Remove All the Things from the coat/instrument closet, which had already overflowed onto various surfaces in the living room and dining room. And the cookbook bookcase is in the same space, so I guess it and its contents need to be Removed too.
We actually Removed only a few Things, but I went to Staples and picked up 21 copy-paper boxes for packing things into. They're now stacked in the kitchen, somewhat alarming the remaining dog. Threw out a few cooking ingredients that sounded interesting at the time, but have expiration dates in the G.W. Bush administration. Packed up excess coffee mugs, gift glassware that we've never used, etc. and put it in a box labeled "Donate".
Saturday, in another effort at Removing Things, we drove to a Department of Sanitation site where they take electronics (many of which are illegal to dispose of at the curb), getting rid of a working CRT television, three partially-working computers, and a non-working cell phone.
Spent an hour or so practicing dance music on pipe-and-tabor and shawm, in preparation for various upcoming gigs (SCA and otherwise).
Then it was Oscars time, one of the few times in the year that we turn on the television to a network station. There were some odd bits: the "In Memoriam" reel included Prince but not David Bowie, who I think was in more and more-widely-distributed movies. (Nor Alan Rickman, who was in more movies than either; we couldn't remember whether he'd been in last year's "In Memoriam" reel.) Amy Adams, who's already been a bridesmaid five times, mysteriously didn't even get a nomination for "Arrival", which had a bunch of other nominations and several awards. And there was the dramatic goof at the end, when somebody handed the presenters for Best Picture the envelope for Best Actress and they called up the team for "La La Land" rather than "Moonlight" as intended. We had seen all the animated and live-action shorts (last weekend), and a few of the features, but there are a number that we haven't seen yet and still want to. Not sure how that's going to fit into evenings between preparing for musical gigs and preparing for a kitchen reno; maybe we'll watch all the ones that are still in theaters during the reno when home is too chaotic to want to spend evenings here.
